Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the time difference between two times?+
Enter the start and end dates and times in Time gap mode. The calculator subtracts the start from the end and displays the duration in hours, minutes, seconds, and decimal hours.
How do I calculate an overnight time gap, such as 10 PM to 6 AM?+
Enter the same date for both values and turn on End is next day if earlier. The end time will be treated as the following day when it is earlier than the start.
Can I add multiple time periods together?+
Yes. Select Add time range for each interval you want included. The calculator displays each interval and the combined total.
Can I subtract lunch breaks from an elapsed-time total?+
Yes. Enter the break length in minutes for the corresponding range. That number of minutes is subtracted before the interval is added to the total.
How are business days calculated?+
Date Gap mode counts Monday through Friday and skips Saturdays and Sundays. You can also enter custom holiday dates in YYYY-MM-DD format to exclude them.
What does include end date mean?+
When enabled, the ending calendar date is counted as an additional day. When disabled, the result is the number of date boundaries crossed from start to end.
Does this calculator account for daylight saving time or other time zones?+
Inputs use your device's local time zone, but the calculator does not convert between time zones. Daylight-saving clock changes can affect elapsed-hour results, so verify zone-sensitive schedules with a trusted time-zone-aware source.
Is this suitable for an official payroll calculation?+
It calculates general time intervals only. It does not apply jurisdiction-specific payroll, overtime, rounding, or employment rules. Use the Time Clock Calculator for timesheet estimates and confirm official payroll records with your employer or payroll provider.
Are the dates and times uploaded or saved?+
No. Calculations run locally in your browser; entered dates and times are not sent to a calculator server or saved to an account.
About this tool
Free Time Gap Calculator
Use the Time Gap Calculator to find the elapsed time between two clock times or date-and-time values. See a clear result in days, hours, minutes, and seconds, plus total hours, total minutes, total seconds, and decimal hours. It also includes a calendar date-gap mode and a quick add-or-subtract-duration mode.
## Calculate a time difference between two times
Choose a start date and time and an end date and time to calculate the elapsed interval. For two clock times on the same day, use the same date for both fields. If the end time is earlier because the interval crosses midnight, select the overnight option. When the end date is already on a later day, enter that date directly instead.
The result displays a plain-language duration as well as total hours, minutes, seconds, and decimal hours. For example, 7 hours and 30 minutes is 7.5 hours. These outputs are useful for elapsed-time checks, schedules, event planning, and simple work intervals.
## Add multiple time ranges and subtract breaks
Add more time ranges to total separate intervals, such as split shifts or several meeting gaps. Enter an unpaid break in minutes for each range to subtract it from that interval before the combined total is calculated. You can remove a range you no longer need and export all rows as a CSV file.
For payroll timesheets with weekly shifts, employee totals, and configurable overtime estimates, use the dedicated Time Clock Calculator. This tool is for general interval arithmetic and does not apply employment or payroll rules.
## Find calendar days and business days between dates
The Date Gap mode counts calendar days between two dates and can optionally include the end date. It also shows weeks and remaining days, a calendar years-months-days span, and weekdays excluding weekends. Enter holidays as dates in YYYY-MM-DD format to exclude them from the business-day count.
Calendar day counts are different from elapsed hours: a calendar day is a date on the calendar, while elapsed hours measure the time between two local date-time values. For a focused calendar calculation with more date-specific breakdowns, use the Date Difference Calculator.
## Add or subtract time from a date and time
Use Add / subtract to start with a local date and time, choose an operation, and enter hours, minutes, and seconds. The calculator returns the resulting local date and time, including when the result rolls into another day, month, or year.
## Local time, daylight saving, and privacy
Date-time inputs use the time zone configured on your device. The calculator does not convert between cities or time zones, and daylight-saving transitions may affect elapsed hours around clock changes. For time-zone-sensitive travel, payroll, legal, or scheduling decisions, verify the result with a trusted zone-aware calendar or official source.
Calculations run in your browser. The dates and times you enter are not sent to a calculator server or saved to an account. The tool provides general arithmetic and does not determine official payroll, billing, or legal time rules.
For weekly employee shifts, breaks, and timesheet estimates, use the Time Clock Calculator. For a focused calendar breakdown, try the Date Difference Calculator, or track time remaining until an event with the Countdown Timer.
