Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate hours worked between two times?+

Enter the clock-in and clock-out times for a shift. The calculator finds the elapsed time, subtracts any unpaid break minutes, and adds the result to that day's and week's totals. An end time at or before the start time is treated as the next day.

How do I calculate decimal hours for payroll?+

The displayed total shows hours and minutes; the downloaded CSV includes decimal hours. For example, 8 hours and 30 minutes is 8.50 decimal hours.

Can I add lunch breaks or more than one shift in a day?+

Yes. Enter a break duration on a shift and leave Paid break unchecked to deduct it, or check Paid break to include that time. Add separate shifts for schedules with multiple clock-in and clock-out periods.

How does the overtime calculation work?+

Choose a weekly threshold over 40 hours, a daily-over-8 plus weekly-over-40 estimate, or turn the estimate off. The rules and thresholds shown are configurable planning assumptions, not legal guidance; overtime requirements differ by location and worker.

Does this calculate take-home pay after taxes?+

No. It estimates gross pay from entered hours, hourly rate, and overtime multiplier. It does not calculate payroll taxes, benefits, or other deductions.

Are biweekly and semi-monthly totals based on actual time entries?+

No. They project the current entered week's average across an approximate pay period. Enter all relevant dates in your payroll system for actual biweekly or semi-monthly totals.

Can I calculate hours for multiple employees?+

Yes. Add employee timesheets, enter a separate hourly rate for each person, and review their individual totals and combined team hours.

Is my timesheet data uploaded?+

The calculator processes entered times in your browser. It does not save the timesheet to an account or send it to a payroll service. Downloaded CSVs are created on your device.

About this tool

Free Time Clock Calculator

Use this time clock calculator to total hours worked from clock-in and clock-out times across a Monday-to-Sunday week. Add multiple shifts for split schedules or lunch breaks, choose whether each break is paid, and review daily hours, weekly totals, estimated overtime, and gross pay. ## Calculate hours worked from time punches Choose a week start date and enter each shift's start and end time. An end time at or before the start time is treated as the following day, which supports overnight shifts. Add separate shift entries when a workday has multiple clock-in and clock-out periods. The calculator shows hours as hours and minutes while the CSV includes decimal hours for payroll review. ## Breaks, rounding, and overtime estimates Enter break minutes for each shift and mark the break as paid when it should remain in the paid hours total. Optional punch rounding applies to clock-in and clock-out times using the selected nearest-minute increment. Choose a weekly overtime estimate over 40 hours, a daily-over-8 plus weekly-over-40 estimate, or no overtime estimate. These are configurable examples, not a determination of overtime eligibility. Rules vary by jurisdiction, worker classification, contract, and employer policy. ## Weekly timesheet and gross pay Add up to ten employee timesheets to compare daily and weekly hours. Enter each employee's hourly rate to estimate regular and overtime gross pay before taxes or deductions. Biweekly and semi-monthly totals are projections based on the entered week's average, not actual time entries for those full pay periods. Download a CSV timesheet for spreadsheet or payroll review, copy a concise summary, or print the page. Data is calculated in your browser and is not sent to a timesheet service by this calculator. Check exported punches and applicable payroll rules before using them for payroll processing. This tool does not estimate tax withholding or net pay. For a separate US paycheck estimate, use the related US Payroll Tax Calculator after reviewing gross wages and applicable overtime rules.
