Important limitations: This is an estimate, not tax advice or tax-return preparation. Federal ordinary-income brackets and standard deductions are modeled for 2025 and 2026. Credits are manual inputs, not eligibility determinations. Capital-gains tax, self-employment tax, rental/business income, AMT, Social Security taxation, special deductions beyond the senior deduction, penalties, and state/local tax liability are not modeled. Results run in your browser and are not sent to a server. Confirm with current IRS instructions or a qualified tax professional.

How to Use

  1. 1.

Choose tax year 2025 for a return generally filed in 2026, or 2026 for a current-year estimate, then select your filing status.

  2. 2.

Enter W-2 wages, any additional ordinary taxable income supported by the estimator, adjustments, and your dependent count.

  3. 3.

Enter an itemized deduction total if applicable and choose whether to use it or the standard deduction; select age 65+ options when they apply.

  4. 4.

Enter federal withholding, estimated payments, and credit totals only after determining eligibility from official guidance.

  5. 5.

Review the federal refund or amount-owed estimate, taxable income, bracket breakdown, and limitations. State withholding is shown separately, not as a state refund estimate.

  6. 6.

Copy, download, or print the estimate for personal planning; verify important amounts with IRS instructions or a qualified tax professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this US tax refund estimator work?+

It estimates adjusted gross income from entered wage and supported ordinary income, subtracts adjustments and the selected deduction, applies the chosen tax year's federal ordinary-income brackets, and compares modeled tax after entered nonrefundable credits with withholding, estimated payments, and entered refundable credits.

Does this calculate my exact IRS refund?+

No. It is a limited educational estimate, not a tax return or IRS determination. Complex income, tax provisions, eligibility rules, rounding, and missing details can change the actual result.

Which tax years and rates does it use?+

It includes 2025 and 2026 ordinary-income bracket schedules and standard deductions based on IRS publications available when the tool was built. Always review the linked IRS rules for the selected tax year.

Does the calculator automatically apply the Child Tax Credit or EITC?+

No. Dependent count is only informational. The calculator does not determine eligibility or phaseouts; you can enter credit amounts separately after verifying them with official IRS guidance.

Does it estimate state tax refunds?+

No. State withholding is displayed separately as an informational input. State tax liability, credits, and refund rules are not calculated.

Can I include self-employment, investment, or rental income?+

Not as a complete calculation. This version does not calculate self-employment tax, capital-gains tax rates, rental or business schedules, or special treatment of investments. Do not combine these as if they were ordinary income without professional or IRS guidance.

How are refundable and nonrefundable credits treated?+

The tool has separate manual inputs. A nonrefundable amount is capped at modeled income tax; a refundable amount is included with payments. It does not decide whether a credit is refundable or whether you qualify.

Is my financial information uploaded?+

The estimate runs in your browser and this calculator does not send entered figures to a WebToolsEdge server. Avoid using a shared device for sensitive financial information.

What should I use for a more complete estimate?+

Use the official IRS Tax Withholding Estimator for withholding planning, current IRS Form 1040 instructions for filing, or a qualified tax professional or tax-preparation service for a complete return.

About this tool

Free Tax Refund Estimator

Use this US tax refund estimator to make a preliminary federal estimate for tax year 2025 or 2026. Enter wages, other ordinary taxable income, adjustments, filing status, deductions, federal withholding, estimated payments, and credit totals to compare estimated federal income tax with payments already made. The result shows an estimated refund or amount owed, adjusted gross income, taxable income, effective rate, marginal bracket, and a bracket-by-bracket view.

## What this federal tax refund estimate includes

The calculator models ordinary federal income-tax brackets and the standard deduction for Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, Head of Household, and Qualifying Surviving Spouse. It compares the current-year standard deduction with an itemized deduction total that you enter. It also includes the regular additional standard deduction for age 65 or older and an estimate of the temporary enhanced senior deduction for tax years 2025 through 2028. Enter federal withholding, estimated payments, and refundable and nonrefundable credit amounts separately to see how payments compare with modeled income tax.

Tax-year rules are labeled in the tool. The 2025 figures reflect the IRS-published 2025 rules, including subsequent legislation; 2026 brackets and deductions use the IRS published inflation-adjusted amounts. These are year-specific inputs, not a forecast of later tax years. See the [IRS 2026 tax rate tables and standard deduction](https://www.irs.gov/irb/2025-45_IRB), the [2025 Form 1040 instructions](https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1040gi), and the [IRS overview of individual tax-law changes](https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/working-families-tax-cuts-individuals-and-workers).

## How a refund or balance due is estimated

The estimate starts with entered wage and other ordinary taxable income, subtracts entered adjustments to estimate AGI, and subtracts the selected deduction to estimate taxable income. Progressive federal brackets are applied only to the taxable income falling in each bracket. Nonrefundable credits are limited to the modeled income tax; refundable credits, federal withholding, and estimated payments are then compared with tax after those credits. The result is a preliminary difference, not a guaranteed payment from the IRS.

Dependents are recorded for context but do not automatically create a Child Tax Credit, Credit for Other Dependents, EITC, education credit, or dependent-care credit. Eligibility depends on facts this simple tool does not collect. Enter credit amounts only after checking the applicable IRS rules. The age-65 option estimates age-related deductions; the temporary senior deduction has its own eligibility requirements and income phaseout, so treat that portion as approximate.

## What the estimator does not calculate

This is a limited federal ordinary-income estimator, not tax software or a Form 1040 line-by-line calculator. It does not determine EITC or dependent-credit eligibility, calculate capital-gains rates, self-employment tax, rental or business income, Social Security benefit taxation, AMT, penalties, education or clean-energy credits, or state and local income-tax liability. State withholding is displayed separately and is not treated as a state refund. Complex returns, including foreign income, trusts, multiple business schedules, and unusual deductions, need current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional.
