Processing happens locally in your browser, so the text does not need to be uploaded for numbering. Add Line Numbers to Text Online The default format produces a familiar numbered list such as 1. Text, 2. Text, and 3. Text. You can switch to parenthesis, square brackets, or a descriptive Line 1: format. Custom prefix and suffix fields also let you create specialized labels for documentation, test cases, support tickets, classroom material, scripts, and data preparation. Flexible Numbering Styles and Starting Values Choose standard decimal numbers, leading-zero numbers such as 01 and 02, or lowercase and uppercase Roman numerals. A custom starting value is useful when a pasted section continues an earlier list. The increment control can count by 1, 2, 5, or another positive step, while adjustable padding keeps exported identifiers aligned when a consistent width matters. Skip Empty Lines or Preserve Their Position Blank lines often separate paragraphs or groups. Keep Number empty lines disabled to preserve those separators without assigning numbers to them. Enable it when every physical row must receive a label, including blank rows. Either choice preserves the actual line structure in the output. Reverse Numbering and Selected Line Ranges Reverse numbering gives the final eligible line the starting number and counts backward toward the top. This is helpful for countdown lists and reverse-priority displays. Range controls let you number only selected physical lines, such as lines 5 through 10, while leaving all other rows unchanged. Range numbers refer to the lines in the original input, including blank lines. Line Numbers for Code and Technical Text Code mode does not alter indentation or syntax. The output uses a monospace editor, and each real newline receives at most one number. Visual word wrapping inside the editor does not create additional line numbers, so a long code statement remains one numbered line. For production source files, use the numbered result as a review or reference copy rather than overwriting code that must still compile. Remove Existing Line Numbers The removal action recognizes common prefixes such as 1. Text, 1) Text, [1] Text, Line 1: Text, and Roman-numeral variants. It is intentionally conservative so ordinary numbers at the beginning of a sentence are less likely to be removed accidentally. Always review important output before replacing an original document.
