Frequently Asked Questions

What is ideal body weight calculation?+

It is an estimate based on a defined formula. This tool uses the Devine equation, which depends on height and the selected male or female constant rather than current weight or age.

What ideal body weight calculation formula does this tool use?+

For males, Devine IBW is 50 kg plus 2.3 kg per inch over five feet. For females, it is 45.5 kg plus 2.3 kg per inch over five feet.

What is adjusted body weight?+

Adjusted body weight adds a fraction of the difference between actual weight and IBW back to IBW. It is used in selected clinical dosing contexts, not as a universal healthy-weight target.

How does the adjusted ideal body weight calculator work?+

It uses IBW + correction factor × (actual weight − IBW). The default factor is 0.4, but the correct factor and whether adjusted weight is appropriate are drug- and protocol-specific.

Why does the tool not show adjusted weight for everyone?+

When actual weight is at or below IBW, applying the formula would create a lower adjusted value that is generally not the intended use of this descriptor. The tool therefore marks it not applicable.

Is ideal body weight my healthiest target weight?+

Not necessarily. Devine IBW does not measure body composition, fitness, or personal health. It is a body-size descriptor and should not automatically become a weight-loss or treatment goal.

Why do different ideal body weight calculators disagree?+

Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi, BMI-based, and other methods use different constants or assumptions. This tool identifies the Devine method so the result is reproducible and transparent.

Can I use pounds and feet instead of kilograms and centimetres?+

Yes. The unit toggles preserve the underlying measurements while displaying height in feet and inches and weight in pounds.

What happens when height is below five feet?+

The tool mathematically extends the Devine equation by subtracting 2.3 kg per inch below five feet, then displays a caution because the traditional formula is usually expressed for inches above five feet.

What does actual weight percentage of IBW mean?+

It divides current weight by estimated IBW and multiplies by 100. It is a comparison only and is not a diagnosis, body-fat measure, or medication recommendation.

Can I calculate a medication dose from this result?+

No. Medication dosing can require actual, ideal, adjusted, lean, or another weight descriptor depending on the drug. A qualified prescriber or pharmacist must confirm the correct protocol.

Is the BMI reference range the same as ideal body weight?+

No. The BMI range is calculated from height and BMI 18.5–24.9, while Devine IBW uses a linear height-and-sex equation. They are separate screening references.

Can children or pregnant people use this calculator?+

This tool is designed as a general adult formula demonstration. Children require growth-chart assessment, and pregnancy-related weight changes require pregnancy-specific professional guidance.

Is this medical advice?+

No. It is an educational estimate. Discuss medication dosing, weight treatment, or health concerns with a qualified healthcare professional.

About this tool

Free Ideal Body Weight Calculator

Use this ideal body weight calculator to estimate Devine ideal body weight (IBW), adjusted body weight, body mass index (BMI), and a height-based BMI reference range. Select the male or female equation option, enter height and current body weight, and choose an adjusted-weight correction factor. The results update instantly in kilograms or pounds.

How Ideal Body Weight Calculation Works

The primary ideal body weight calculation uses the Devine equation, a height- and sex-based body-size descriptor originally introduced for medication-dosing work. For the male formula, IBW equals 50 kilograms plus 2.3 kilograms for each inch above five feet. For the female formula, IBW equals 45.5 kilograms plus 2.3 kilograms for each inch above five feet.

Current body weight and age do not change the Devine result. Two adults with the same height and selected formula option receive the same IBW estimate even if their body composition, health, age, and actual weight differ. That limitation is important: an IBW number is not proof of a person's healthiest weight and should not be treated as an automatic weight-loss target.

Ideal Body Weight Calculation Formula

The ideal body weight calculation formula shown by the tool is transparent. Height entered in centimetres is converted to inches before the equation is applied. When height is below five feet, the formula mathematically subtracts 2.3 kilograms per inch. Because the traditional equation is usually expressed for inches above five feet, the interface flags shorter-height results as extrapolations that deserve additional caution.

Several other IBW equations exist, including Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas. They use different constants and can return different answers for the same person. This calculator uses one clearly identified method instead of averaging unrelated equations and presenting the result as more precise than it is.

Adjusted Ideal Body Weight Calculator

The adjusted ideal body weight calculator uses the equation adjusted body weight = IBW + correction factor × (actual body weight − IBW). A correction factor of 0.4 is a common example in selected clinical protocols, while published references describe factors that may range from about 0.3 to 0.6 depending on the drug and context. The factor is therefore visible and editable rather than hidden.

Adjusted body weight was developed mainly as a medication-dosing descriptor for some patients whose actual body weight is above IBW. It is not a universal nutrition goal, fitness target, or replacement for actual weight. This tool only displays an adjusted result when current weight is above the estimated IBW. If actual weight is at or below IBW, it reports that adjusted weight is not applicable rather than creating a misleading lower number.

Ideal and Adjusted Body Weight Calculator Results

This ideal and adjusted body weight calculator places the two estimates side by side. IBW reflects height and the selected Devine constant. Adjusted body weight blends IBW with part of the difference between actual and ideal weight. The page also shows actual weight as a percentage of IBW so users can understand the comparison without interpreting it as a diagnosis.

For the calculation, ideal body weight is displayed in the chosen weight unit, while the underlying formula runs in kilograms. Switching between metric and imperial units preserves the same measurements. Height can be entered in centimetres or feet and inches, and weight can be entered in kilograms or pounds.

BMI and Height-Based Weight Range

BMI is current weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The calculator displays the standard adult screening categories and a weight range corresponding to BMI 18.5 through 24.9 at the entered height. This range is mathematically separate from Devine IBW, so it can be wider and may not contain exactly the same central value.

BMI and IBW both have limitations. Neither directly measures body fat, muscle mass, bone density, fitness, metabolic health, pregnancy-related changes, or a person's medical needs. Athletes, older adults, people with unusual body composition, and people receiving clinical treatment may require a more individualized assessment.

When Adjusted Body Weight May Be Used

Adjusted body weight appears in selected medication protocols, particularly where a drug does not distribute through body tissues in direct proportion to total weight. The appropriate body-size descriptor can differ by medication: some dosing guidance uses actual weight, some uses IBW, some uses adjusted weight, and some uses lean body weight or body surface area. Correction factors can also differ.

For that reason, this calculator must never be used on its own to select a medication dose. A prescriber or pharmacist should confirm the drug-specific protocol, dose limits, kidney or liver considerations, monitoring requirements, and the correct weight descriptor. The result is an educational calculation aid, not a prescription.

How to Interpret the Calculation Responsibly

Use the result to understand how common IBW and adjusted-weight formulas work. If your goal is nutrition or weight planning, combine this page with broader context rather than treating IBW as a required destination. Sustainable goals, current health, food intake, physical activity, laboratory findings, medication, and professional guidance may matter more than one formula.

The copy and print controls can save a calculation for discussion, but avoid sharing measurements you consider private. Recalculate after correcting a measurement or changing units, and read the displayed formula and safety notice before using the number in any real-world decision.

To estimate daily energy needs after reviewing the body-size references, use the Calorie Needs Calculator. For a broader adult wellness estimate that combines BMR, BMI, activity, and optional waist context, try the Metabolic Age Calculator, or browse all Calculators. These tools provide educational estimates and do not replace individualized medical, medication, or nutrition advice.
