Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate cost per serving from a grocery package?+

Multiply package price by package count, then divide by the total number of servings across those packages. This calculator shows both cost per label serving and an adjusted cost for your usual portion.

How do I calculate cost per portion if I eat more than the label serving?+

Multiply the cost per label serving by the number of label servings in your portion. For a 1.5-serving portion, multiply the label-serving cost by 1.5.

Can I compare multipacks?+

Yes. Enter the package price, package count, servings in each package, and serving size for each product. The calculator adds package servings and checkout price before comparing.

Is cost per serving the same as unit price?+

No. Unit price is commonly expressed per weight, volume, or item count. Cost per serving uses the serving count stated on a nutrition label and can be adjusted to your actual portion.

Does this tell me which food is healthier or better?+

No. It compares arithmetic cost only. It does not compare nutrition, quality, ingredients, allergens, taste, freshness, or suitability.

Does the calculator use current grocery prices?+

No. Enter the package prices from your store. The tool does not fetch prices, taxes, discounts, or coupons.

Is my grocery information uploaded?+

No. The calculation runs in the current browser page; entries are not sent to a server by this tool.

About this tool

Free Grocery Cost Per Serving Calculator

Use this Grocery Cost Per Serving Calculator to compare grocery package prices by the serving count on the label and by the portion you actually eat. Enter the package price, number of packages, servings per package, and label servings in your usual portion. Compare two to four products, see the full checkout total, and identify the lowest estimated cost per portion. This free calculator uses your entries only and does not fetch live store prices.

Compare Grocery Packages by Cost Per Serving

A package with a higher shelf price can still cost less for each serving, while package size alone does not tell you what one meal or bowl costs. This calculator divides the total package price by the total label servings, then adjusts that amount to the portion size you enter. It shows the checkout total separately so a lower per-serving amount is not confused with a lower amount due at checkout.

How to Calculate Cost Per Serving

First multiply the price per package by the number of packages. Multiply servings per package by the same package count. Divide the package total by the combined servings to get cost per label serving. If your usual portion is larger or smaller than the label serving, multiply by the number of label servings in your portion to estimate cost per portion.

For example, a $4.99 container with 30 label servings costs about $0.17 per label serving. If a bowl uses 1.5 label servings, the estimated portion cost is about $0.25. Values are rounded for display; comparisons use the underlying calculation.

Compare Multipacks and Actual Portion Sizes

Enter the number of packages you plan to buy to compare multipacks. For a single package, leave the count at one. Use the serving count printed on the Nutrition Facts label. If your typical portion uses one and a half label servings, enter 1.5; if it uses half a label serving, enter 0.5.

You can compare up to four products at once. The best-value indicator ranks only the calculated cost per portion. It does not tell you that products are nutritionally equivalent or that the largest package is the right purchase. Consider the item, package freshness, storage, waste, and how much you will actually use.

Cost Per Serving versus Unit Price

Unit price usually compares a product by weight, volume, or count, such as dollars per ounce. Cost per serving uses the serving count shown on the product label. This can be useful when package units differ or when you want to estimate your normal bowl, scoop, or snack portion. Serving definitions can differ across products, so comparisons are most meaningful for similar foods and comparable serving sizes.

How to Use the Grocery Cost Calculator

Enter a product name if useful, then enter its price, package count, servings per package, and the number of label servings in your normal portion. Add another product and enter the same information. Review checkout total, cost per label serving, and cost per portion before copying or printing the comparison. Use Load example to see a sample calculation.
